Bruins. “The winning goal was on the power play … we have to play better.” It’s the second straight year the Original Six rivals have met in the first round,

BOSTON (AP) – Phil Kessel’s first NHL playoff experience is one he’d like to forget, and he’s well on his way to erasing the memories of last year’s postseason benching. The third-year forward had two goals and an assist to lead Boston to a 4-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night in the opener of the best-of-seven series. “He’s improved leaps and bounds,” Bruins forward Marc Savard said. “He brings a dimension not too many guys have, with his speed and skill. He’s ready to take the torch.

” Tim Thomas stopped 26 shots, and Zdeno Chara scored a power-play goal with 8:45 left to break a third-period tie before Kessel iced it with an empty-netter. Game 2 is Saturday night. “We have to have the confidence we can win these road games, and we have to be more disciplined,” Canadiens captain Saku Koivu said.

BISHOPVILLE – Lee County has the potential to become a popular tourist attraction, local business and community leaders believe, and they will gather at 9 a.m. Friday at the South Carolina Cotton Museum to help develop a marketing plan with that in mind. Commissioned by the South Carolina Parks and Recreation Commission, Robert Cleverdon of Ireland-based Tourism Development International will serve as the primary facilitator.

Cleverdon has recently completed a statewide tourism action plan, said Lee County’s Marsha Hewitt, a member of the Pee Dee Tourism Commission. Cleverdon is an international tourism development and marketing analyst. “People don’t think of tourism as business,” said Hewitt, “but it is. We are missing a big opportunity if we don’t take advantage of tourism in Lee County.

Brazilian Wandering. World’s Deadliest Spider Found In Whole Foods In Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. – One of the most deadly spiders in the world has been found in the produce section of a Tulsa grocery store. An employee of Whole Foods Market found the Brazilian Wandering Spider Sunday in bananas from Honduras and managed to catch it in a container. The spider was given to University of Tulsa Animal Facilities director Terry Childs who said this type of spider kills more people than any other.

Childs said a bite will kill a person in about 25 minutes and while there is an antidote he doesn’t know of any in the Tulsa area. Spiders often are found in imported produce, and a manager at Whole Foods says the store regularly checks its goods and that’s how the spider was found.

Little Steven. GOP Doubts Stimulus Bill Will Pass Senate

WASHINGTON (Feb. 1) – Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Sunday the massive stimulus bill backed by President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats could go down to defeat if it’s not stripped of unnecessary spending and focused more on housing issues and tax cut. The Senate version of the bill, which topped out at nearly $900 billion, is headed to the floor for debate.

The House bill totaled about $819 billion and earned no Republican votes, even though it easily passed the Democratic-controlled House. At some point lawmakers will need to compromise on the competing versions. McConnell and other Republicans suggested that the bill needed an overhaul because it doesn’t pump enough into the private sector through tax cuts and allows Democrats to go on a spending spree unlikely to jolt the economy.

Aint Happy Days. Sundance EXCL: Antoine Fuqua’s Finest

One of the filmmakers you might not expect to see at the is Antoine Fuqua, who cut his teeth on studio movies over the last ten years, the most memorable one being Training Day, a tough L.A. police story which earned Denzel Washington an Oscar and Ethan Hawke his own nomination. Fuqua brought his new police drama , made outside of the studio system, to this year’s festival looking for distribution and reactions from Sundance’s legendary movie-loving audiences.

Besides moving to the East Coast, this is a very different movie in that it explores the day-to-day lives of three police officers in different stages of their careers, pulling varying duties in the war against drugs and crime in Brooklyn. Richard Gere plays Eddie, a 20-year vet who is just a week away from retirement, who turns to alcohol and a prostitute named Chantel, to get him through what has been an unfulfilling career as a police officer. Don Cheadle is Tango, who has been working undercover in the thick of drugdealers and killers, trying to maintain that cover while desperately wanting to get away from all the death and violence. Brooklyn’s Finest also reunites Fuqua with Ethan Hawke, who plays Sal, a narcotics officer trying to make ends meet to support his family, who gets into a lot of bad situations as he tries to get what he thinks he deserves.
