Peter Jennings. Documentary about Eddie Adams is as moving as his photographs

Eddie Adams made me weep long before I knew his name. With his camera he caught the faces of the ; the chilling execution of a handcuffed prisoner on a Saigon street caught in a split-second just as the bullet slammed against the helpless man’s head is the one that would change Adams’ life and the war along with it. Titled “Saigon Execution,” the 1968 photo would win him , but over the years much more of Adams’ work would move, shock, uplift, unite and sadden us, as we discover in Cooper’s love letter of a documentary, “An Unlikely Weapon.” Just about everyone starts smiling as they talk about Adams, a sardonic old soul even in his early years.

And Adams on camera doesn’t disappoint. He wears disdain like armor. His assessment of the Pulitzer photo? Badly composed, bad lighting.

Look Good Wearing Future. The couple sell fertile eggs (so customers can hatch their own birds), tail feathers, reference books and DVDs, and they host a peacock blog.

Fett and Buck are peacock experts. They have authored peafowl reference books, produced peacock DVDs and served as peacock consultants. They are two of a very few people in the country who focus solely on peacocks. The birds belong to a dwindling genus, and the couple’s business, the Peacock Information Center, faces an uncertain future.

The birds, long-feathered tails dragging behind them, scamper across wooden planks high above Fett as he talks about the breeds and controversies involved with his prized poultry. A bird’s booming cry, which sounds like “yelp,” echoes from the rafters. “People always complain about how loud they are,” Fett said. “I don’t even hear them anymore.

Clique Movie. Rolly: GOP disinvites would

Like a moth to a flame, Utah Republican Party officials can’t seem to help themselves when it comes to dealing with dissenters. They’ll call the cops, attract a good deal of unwanted publicity and, in the end, get burned once again. Newly elected Salt Lake County Republican Chairman Thomas Wright has sent an e-mail to his executive committee members letting them know that long-time party dissident Mike Ridgway and his wife, Bobbi, are not welcome at the next meeting.

If they show up, the police will be called. That triggered this e-mail response from Ridgway: “Thomas, you are a small-minded tyrannical punk (does that violate Ronald Reagan’s rule about Republicans speaking ill of each other?)” This is becoming a Utah version of the movie “Groundhog Day.” Ridgway is told to stay away.

When Google Goes Down, It Falls Hard

You’ve got it backwards. The drop is ho-hum for a crash. The astounding part is how quickly, upon recovery, the usage curve goes back up to where it would be expected to be.

Posted by: dan42889 | 05/14/09 | 11:00 pm Why do I get the feeling that Ryan doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about? He doesn’t seem to understand the graph very well and makes false conclusions. Site went down, people could no longer visit, outage shown on Google traffic graph. It is REALLY simple. It isn’t astounding that the traffic went from 15 to 1gbps, it’s expected. If the entire service went down, it would be at 0.

Justin Timberlake Sneaks Sleeping With Britney and Moms Into SNL

We get that it’s a joke. And yes people found it funny. But not everyone. I guess it’s just because it’s an OLD joke. Seriously? I personally never thought it was cool for him to out Britney with the whole, “Britney and I had sex everyone! She’s not really a virgin!” thing.

It wasn’t his place to talk about that THEN and it isn’t NOW. So, I guess that’s why I didn’t find it all that funny. The rest of the sketch was good. I have to admit, I love the energy he brings to the show. He IS funny.

Starship Troopers. Robert Heinlein at 100: How the science fiction master created the template for our looser, hipper, more pluralist world.

How the science fiction master created the template for our looser, hipper, more pluralist world. | August/September 2007 The science fiction writer Robert Heinlein’s 100th birthday is July 7. Despite his visions of near-immortals and cryogenic sleep, he didn’t live to see it.

He died in 1988, mourned by millions of readers who saw him more as a father or a guru than merely as a spinner of captivating tales. Fans plan to celebrate his centennial at a conference in Kansas City, near Heinlein’s birthplace, in July. Among those who will be paying him homage are Buzz Aldrin (the second man to walk on the moon) and Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.), whose past includes stints as both a hippie folksinger and a Reagan speechwriter.
