Final Performance. Susan Boyle Loses ‘Britain’s Got Talent’

Asked if it was worth it, she replied, “Well worth it! Well worth it! To hell with everything!” Asked if she feels at home onstage, she said, “I really feel at home onstage, of course I do, I’m among friends am I not?” she asked, looking straight into the crowd. Judge Piers Morgan, who commented extensively on Boyle’s hardships last week, even citing negative headlines before saying, “I thought, all you have to do to answer all your critics… is sing the song we all fell in love with, sing it better than you did last time, and Susan, I’m not supposed to favor anyone in this competition as a judge, but forget it, that was the greatest performance I’ve seen in ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ history, you should win this competition, I loved it!” Boyle grimaced slightly and put her hand over her face. Judge Amanda Holden seconded his praise, adding that “Simon [Cowell] had a tear in his eye, and I’ve never seen that before.” For his part, Cowell referred to her “weird seven weeks” and said, “You had every right to walk away from this … and a lot of people said you shouldn’t even be in this competition, that you’re not equipped to deal with it.

For what? For you to sit at home with your cat and say ‘I’ve missed an opportunity’? I completely disagree with that. Win or lose, you had the guts to come back here tonight and face your critics, and you beat them. And that’s the most important thing. Whatever happens, and I’ve got to know the real Susan Boyle, who is not the person I’ve seen portrayed in the media, you can walk away from this, win or lose, with your head held high. I absolutely adore you.”.

Dame Edna. Heidi Stephens: Britain’s Got Talent Episode 3 Liveblog

So, before we kick off, I’d just like to confess that I have never watched Britain’s Got Talent before (other than Susan Boyle on YouTube, obv), because it features Piers Morgan, which renders it unfit for my televisual consumption. But despite the presence of this odious little cockweasel, I am relinquishing my BGT virginity on the basis that a) I might be missing out on TV heaven and probably shouldn’t knock it ’til I’ve tried it, and b) Jason Deans asked me nicely. Also, just a short note to those of you that may have taken the time to pop by to inform us that this is a horrendous dumbing down of The Guardian and a total waste of internet space. Can you not bother? ‘Cos it’s just a bit of fun, and there’s lots of other blogs and news stories out there that may be more to your taste so, you know, be nice.

Anyway, tonight we are promised more singing and dancing, and a guy who does some act with knives (which alas does not involve Piers being strapped to a cheeseboard). I’m excited. No, really. Are you? Back at 8pm! 8.00pm: It’s starting! We are promised more amazing acts, fighting for the prize of a lifetime – £100k, and performing for The Queen. I bet she can’t wait.

Rodney Rogers. Committee recommends business license for Starship

Members of Coweta County’s Tax Rate Review and Appeals Committee voted 4-1 Wednesday to recommend to county commissioners that Starship Adult Novelties & Gifts be issued a business license to operate its Thomas Crossroads location. Commissioners are expected to take up the issue in June. The end of the lengthy appeal process that began in mid-April came with comparatively few comments from county consultant attorney Scott Bergtholdt and Starship attorney Alan Begner. Committee member Claude Vickers made the initial motion that was amended to include two other provisions.

The final motion recommended that the county commission overturn staff’s recommendation and issue Starship a business license as a general retail business that would be in compliance with the ordinance as it stood on Jan. 26 prior to the adoption of the new sexually-oriented business and obscenity ordinances. The motion also included the stipulation that Starship conduct monthly audits during the first year of operation and quarterly audits if no problem is found. The motion also provided for unannounced visits to be conducted by county staff.

Cemetery. “This is something we want to take care of,” Spell said.

Death was an opportunist on the docks when Tacoma was young and booming with the timber trade, the tea trade, the grain trade. A load would shift. A line would slip. A longshoreman would die. When, in 1886, dockworkers formed the Stevedores, Longshoremen and Riggers’ Union of Puget Sound, that was one of the first realities to which they attended.

They had staged a five-day strike and won a raise from 30 to 40 cents an hour. They would go on to bargain for safer working conditions, decent wages and worker rights. But first they bought grave sites for the brothers they knew would be killed on the job. This morning, members of the International Longshore & Warehouse Union, Local 23, will gather to honor the memory of the 24 men buried in those unmarked graves at Tacoma Cemetery.

Bowman Capsule. Joyce: One down, one to go

With six days to go, Kelowna has locked up a spot in the Memorial Cup final, but who they’ll play is still up for grabs. RIMOUSKI: The Memorial Cup is a ten-day tournament but half the suspense ended on Day Four. Kelowna’s 6-4 victory over Drummondville Monday night locked up a spot in the final for the Western Hockey League champions.

The identity of their opponents in the championship game is all that’s left to be determined but if the Rockets win again Tuesday night it won’t be the Windsor Spitfires. With all due respect to Kelowna and Drummondville for what they’ve accomplished just to get to this tournament, I have to say that neither team looked like a national champion last night. Granted, the game featured some interesting stuff, notably Jamie Benn’s four goals (and his 150-foot shot that hit a post instead of Drummondville’s empty net in the dying seconds). But it wasn’t a classic by any stretch.

Keith Urban. ‘American Idol’: Kris Allen Crowned the Winner in Finale Shocker

Megan Joy and Michael Sarver sang a bit of Americana called “Pretty Flowers,” accompanied on banjo by Steve Martin, who wrote the song (and predicted that he would be the winner tonight). Finally Adam and Kris fronted Queen for a rousing performance of “We Are the Champions.” Among the other musical guests were Lionel Richie, Carlos Santana, Jason Mraz, and Rod Stewart. There were also some humor segments.

Ryan Seacrest introduced four montages mocking the judges for their verbal tics. (Randy Jackson says “for me”; Kara DioGuardi calls rejected contestants “sweetie”; Paula Abdul stumbles over big words; and Simon Cowell keeps asking people to repeat what they just said.) And Ryan presented the ironic Golden Idol awards, which “honor” the worst contestants from the early audition and Hollywood-week episodes. In the first of three prepared bits, the Outstanding Male award went to Nick Mitchell, who claimed he had no idea he was going to win, then ripped off his sweats to reveal he was dressed as his alter ego, Norman Gentle.

Mark Ballas. Shawn Johnson Becomes New ‘Dancing’ Champ

LOS ANGELES — Shawn Johnson is adding a mirrorball trophy to her collection of Olympic medals. After all, the two glittering prizes seem to go very well together. The 17-year-old gymnast was named “Dancing With the Stars” champion Tuesday during the season finale of the hit ABC show, the third Olympian in eight seasons to win. Johnson and her professional partner, Mark Ballas, held the mirrorball trophy aloft as the rest of the contestants rushed out to greet them, hoisting the couple on their shoulders as sparkling confetti flew.

“This has been the best experience ever,” Johnson said after her victory. “I’ve grown so much.” Johnson was tied with fellow finalist Gilles Marini after Melissa Rycroft was dismissed earlier in Tuesday’s show. All three finalists performed one last dance, each earning a perfect score of 30 from the judges.

News. Moderate quake rocks Los Angeles area

There were no reports of any damage at LAX, and people who live north of downtown Los Angeles either felt a light shake or nothing at all. The Los Angeles Fire Department received plenty of calls, but none to report any major injuries, said spokesman Brian Humphrey. Tom Oswalt, 46, said he was packing clothes for a business trip at his home in Long Beach when the shaking started.

“First thing I thought was ‘Is this the big one?’ It was pretty powerful,” he said. “My first thought was to get out of the building, get my dog and get out of the building. Now we’re just waiting for aftershocks.
