Time Sydney. South Africa eye top spot (From Western Telegraph)

© Press Association 2008 South Africa are just one win away from becoming the best Test side in the world after condemning Australia to a first series defeat on home soil in almost 16 years following a nine-wicket victory in the second Test at the MCG. The Proteas – led by a fluent 75 from captain Graeme Smith – overhauled a modest victory target of 183 for the loss of only one wicket on the final day to take an unassailable 2-0 lead and seal a first-ever Test series triumph in Australia. Hashim Amla, a man not burdened by scars from previous defeats to the hosts, stroked the winning runs shortly after lunch as South Africa became the first team to overcome Australia at home since the West Indies in 1992-93. That was also the last occasion Australia lost back-to-back Tests at home. The days of South Africa squandering winning positions against their illustrious opponents now appear to be gone, while Australia’s 13-year reign at the top of world cricket could also soon come to an end.

Another loss in the final Test in Sydney, which would see Australia whitewashed for the first time in a series since 1984 against the West Indies, would see Ricky Ponting’s side officially unseated by their opponents in the world rankings. South Africa were never under any pressure in their run chase. Needing a flurry of wickets early on the final day to have any hope of winning, Australia did not make a breakthrough until 16 minutes before lunch when Smith was trapped lbw by a Nathan Hauritz arm ball. Smith had dominated a 121-run opening stand with Neil McKenzie and it was a shame for the Proteas skipper he was not there at the end having once again shown the kind of leadership befitting a man who was made captain of his country at the tender age of 22.

Results. Rashad Evans, Quinton Jackson, Frank Mir all post wins at UFC 92

LAS VEGAS – Rashad Evans dethroned light-heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin at UFC 92 Saturday night, taking away the title with some vicious ground and pound in the third round at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Griffin used his size and kicks to keep Evans at bay in the first two rounds of a battle of winners of Seasons 1 and 2 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality TV show. But Evans took the champion down in the third, hurt him with a big right to the head and then unleashed four more rights and seven lefts to the head and it was over. Elsewhere on the “UFC 92: The Ultimate 2008″ mixed martial arts card, Quinton (Rampage) Jackson knocked out Wanderlei (The Axe Murderer) Silva with one punch in the first round of their light-heavyweight grudge match and former heavyweight champion Frank Mir looked dominant in upsetting interim title-holder Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira via second-round TKO.

Evans, 29, made US$130,000, including a $65,000 win bonus, while Griffin earned $100,000, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission. At 6-3, Griffin had four inches on Evans and used his leg kicks to good effect in the first round as he did in winning the title from Jackson. Evans (18-0-1) came close to connecting with some real power shots but never really found his range. Griffin (16-5) came on like a man possessed in the second round, with Evans hanging on for a time.

Green Acres Lyrics. The Tribune, Chandigarh, India

There could be finally some respite in store for the relatives of patients who generally end up running from one hospital to another in search of blood to save lives of their near and dear ones as plans are afoot to bring all blood banks in the city online. If the proposal put through by the Chandigarh State AIDS Control Organisation (SACS) to the National AIDS Control Organisation goes through, besides an online link up of the blood banks, “e-directory” would be created that would make even the urgent SMS seeking blood, a thing of the past. While the online link would make available real time blood stock position, blood group and blood components, the e-directory will contain contact details of all blood-donor volunteers. Dr Suvir Saxena, deputy director, blood safety, SACS, said, “We have sent the proposal to NACO for approval.

If everything goes well, we will start this facility very soon.” Dr Debashish Gupta, national consultant, blood safety, NACO, said all data would be maintained by the special software, which was specially designed by Hospital Medical Research Institute (HMRI). Online information about the availability of bloodstock, blood group, and blood component will help the needy people, said Dr Debashish. “Directory will be available with details of all eight groups of blood. This will help in augmenting availability of fresh blood in time of need, as fresh blood is always superior to stored blood.

Walmart Christmas Hours. For shoppers, another gift

Call it Black Friday, take two. Extended hours, extra coupons and serious sales await post-holiday shoppers tomorrow. After the worst holiday shopping season in decades, experts are predicting even deeper discounts the day after Christmas as retailers struggle to unload merchandise that failed to sell in recent weeks. That’s not good news for retailers who may see big losses.

“In some cases, they’re losing money, but they just want to move the inventory out,” said Malachy Kavanagh, spokesman for the International Council of Shopping Centers. “They don’t want to carry it over to the next year.” For shoppers like Kristin Minogue, the sales are good news.

Orleans Bowl. Notre Dame looking to end record 9

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame is putting a lot of meaning into what most people consider a meaningless Hawaii Bowl. There will be no rankings at stake when the Fighting Irish (6-6) face Hawaii (7-6) on Dec. 24, no matchup of Heisman Trophy finalists and certainly no team feeling as if it had been bypassed for a BCS game.

The Irish, though, still believe they have plenty to play for, topped by trying to end their NCAA-record nine-game bowl losing streak. The streak began with a 41-24 loss to Colorado in the Fiesta Bowl at the end of the 1994 season. “That’s something we talked about as a team. It’s very, very important to go out there and get a win, just to go out there and not only have a good time but get things going back right for the bowl streak,” tailback Armando Allen said.

Roof. The Beaufort Gazette: Bloody water and other souvenirs

Some souvenirs have deep personal meaning. Richard K. Betts wrote in 1995 in an article in Newsweek that he kept his father’s World War II dog tags, campaign ribbon, Bronze Star and citation “for heroic achievement … during an armored infantry attack through murderous enemy Panzerfaust and machine gun fire.” When he read the citation to his five-year-old daughter, “she listened respectfully but blankly. … She also had to ask me, ‘Daddy, what’s a war?’ When she’s older, maybe she’ll understand why I read it to her, and why my voice cracked.

” Souvenir shopping can also become an obsession. Just think of Charles Foster Kane’s acres of unopened crates in “Citizen Kane” or Big Daddy’s forgotten treasures in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” One souvenir can also be a key to unlock the meaning of another memento.
